Everyone has been up late writing a paper or just because they can’t sleep. So what do you do when this happens to you? Most people watch late night talk shows. My personal favorite is Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. Something about a man that can love Drew Barrymore and the Red Sox at the same time just gets me going. Many of these late night talk show hosts do very well for themselves. For example, look at Larry King. He has both feet in the grave and his girlfriend is a senior here at Salem State. The great thing about late night shows is they are all focused on current trends.
You’re probably asking yourself, “As a PR pro, how is this useful for me?” By watching these shows, you can see what the general public finds interesting—movies, television shows, music, technology, etc. You see what is currently capturing people’s attention and use these trends to better position your clients campaign. You can find out what the public wants to see, what humor they will respond too. A key piece to any PR campaign is to understand your publics.
Many of these shows feature guests who the people want to know about. Don’t you think your client is someone the public should know about? If not, then what are you doing running a PR campaign for them?
Getting a client on any kind of talk show is a major boost for any PR campaign. By getting a client on these shows, you expose them to a number of audiences that you might have not reached before. Use the conversation that is generated during the interview to generate twitter conversation. Take the spot on the show and send it viral.
These late night shows are all about informing while entertaining, so it is critical that your client do just that. Maybe your client’s spot becomes so entertaining that suddenly your campaign takes on a new face and the public responds more effectively then you could have ever imagined. You can go from the same old boring PR campaign with all the bells and whistles of social media to a more toned down campaign that catches everyone’s eye and leaves a lasting impression.
So get your client involved with the media, all of it, not just the social media market. Get them on TV with personalities and hit the new expanding market of late night talk shows. If none come to mind here is a list of some of our chapters favorite hosts: David Letterman, Jay Leno, Jimmy Fallon, George Lopez and we’d like to welcome back Conan O’Brien.
Always remember: Know who you are targeting and find a way to make them talk about your client.
